The fourth volume of the Lieder und Chorwerke (Songs and Choral Works) from the Reger Hybrid Edition of Works (RWA) presents songs Max Reger composed between November 1903 and July 1905. In his Opus 75 songs, Reger set verses by classic German poets, such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as folksong texts in his usual avant-garde manner. In the 30 songs from the first two collections of the Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, on the other hand, the composer distanced himself from his previous approach to songwriting by adopting a simpler, folk-like style. The popular Schlichte Weisen were also a concession to his publishers' wishes. The songs in Opus 88 were published not by Lauterbach & Kuhn but by Simrock, a firm more willing to accept music that departed from Alltagsgeschmack (everyday or popular taste). The four songs were dedicated to the mezzo-soprano Lula Mysz-Gmeiner.In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA), supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. As a Hybrid Edition, it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques. The digital offer belonging to the volume is published in an online portal.

This new edition of John La Montaine's Twelve Studies for Two Flutes, Opus 46, has been newly re-engraved and includes an extra copy of the score (One for each player, or also for adjudication). These twelve studies, although intended to be played from beginning to end can be extracted and performed separately at the discretion of the performers. Written in the style of 12-tone serialism, these duets are an interesting exercise in what can be done with the theoretical manipulation of the tone rows used. While not as tuneful as some of John La Montaine's other compositions, they are a good example of his experimentation with other compositional styles.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed this small series of variations without opus number (now cataloged as WoO 64) in the years between 1790 and 1792, shortly before his moving from Bonn to Vienna, when he was still working for the von Breuning family and taking lessons from Christian Gottlob Neefe. The manuscript of this composition is unusually clean and without errors and does not show the indication for harp, which instead appears in the first print, published in Bonn in 1798 by Simrock. It is not known exactly if their destination for the harp was in Beethoven’s intentions from the beginning or if it was an initiative of the publisher that he eventually approved. These Variations are based on the theme of the Swiss song Es hätt ‘and’ Buur e ‘Töchterli, attested in the collections of popular songs since 1781, which tells the story of a pastoral love between the young Dursli and Babeli.
